Chapter 10

Fear paralyzed Andrew. He had no clue how to help Jack. Every solution that came to him was pushed aside because of Billy. Whether or not Jack's dad would actually harm Billy was questionable. He'd seen the results of Nathaniel's anger and it scared him. A month wasn't long when he thought about the rest of their lives together. They could make anything work because they had love on their side.

Saying good-bye would be hard. He hoped Jack wanted to have sex. If Jack didn't bring it up, he would. Tonight, they'd become one, committing themselves to each other for life.

Classes were a wash. He didn't pay any attention to what his teachers said though he did write down the homework. The final bell rang and he looked for Jack but didn't see him. At home, he pulled out his books, working through the homework he'd been given. His mom and dad both commented on how responsible he was being. Telling them the truth was out of the question.

His mom made chicken and broccoli casserole for dinner. After picking at the food, trying to act like he really wanted to eat, he washed his plate and helped his mom clear the table.

"I'm going to bed," Andrew announced, hoping they didn't think it too odd for him to turn in early.

"Already. It's only eight thirty."

"I'm tired and have a book for English to read. I'll probably spend some time reading before I go to sleep."

He felt like his parents were going to say something, but they didn't. Since moving home, they'd been mostly benign. They hadn't tried to make his life hell, which surprised him. Well except for the job thing. He still hadn't gone to search for a job. With Jack gone, he'd have to have something to keep him busy. Tomorrow afternoon he'd go looking for somewhere to work.

His parents hadn't gone back to their normal ways. It was like they were almost afraid to do the wrong thing for fear of getting punished again. They weren't really nice, but they weren't anywhere near as evil as they had previously been.

Andrew set his alarm for a little before midnight and turned the volume low, hoping it didn't disturb his parents. His jeans were folded on his closet floor along with a shirt and sweater. Opening drawers or sliding his clothes on the hangers might make noise so he prepped everything before he went to bed. He made sure to really brush his teeth and put a mint on top of his clothes, hoping that would take care of his breath before he met with Jack.

Sleep didn't come easy and he woke every few minutes. Finally, close to ten thirty he fell into a deep sleep but jerked awake before his alarm rang, afraid that the noise would wake his parents. A quick check of his clock showed that his alarm would ring in two minutes. Andrew switched it off and quietly crawled from his bed. Pulling on his clothes was the easy part, but getting out of the house was another story.
